Dangerous Drugs - Lipitor

A study conducted by the Women’s Health Initiative of 150,000 postmenopausal women found that those taking a statin were almost 50% percent more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes.

For women with normal body weight, the statistic rose to 86% more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes. Pfizer, the giant pharmaceutical company that makes Lipitor (also called atorvastatin) has known since 1996 that the drug carried a risk of diabetes, but only started warning doctors and patients about the risk when it was forced to by the FDA in 2012. With adequate warnings and information about this side effect, doctors could have been monitoring patients’ glucose levels for signs of diabetes. Unfortunately, this didn’t happen.

Thousands of women who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes after taking Lipitor may be the victims of unscrupulous profit motives of may unknowingly be victims of Lipitor.

Lipitor Diabetes Lawsuits

Recognized By A Special Federal Court Panel Lipitor lawsuits filed in federal courts on behalf of people who developed type 2 diabetes after taking Lipitor, were consolidated in the District of South Carolina on February 18, 2014 by a special order of the Judicial Panel on Multi-District Litigation. By consolidating lawsuits from across the United States into what is called a mass tort, the court will be able to conserve resources, avoid duplication of discovery, and prevent inconsistent pretrial rulings. Each and every case is still an individual case (not a class action) but they are joined together so that the litigation can proceed as quickly efficiently as possible. The Federal Court in these cases also streamlines the process so that 99% of the people making a claim do not have to travel, do not have to be questioned in deposition or burden their families with significant time and expense.
