BAIR HUGGER HIP & KNEE INFECTION LAWSUITS
The attorneys at TheLawFirm.com are proud to represent individuals who developed serious infections, including MRSA or sepsis, following hip or knee replacement surgery that involved the use of one of the ‘Bair Hugger’ forced air warmer systems.
We are investigating claims that the Bair Hugger warming blanket caused our clients to suffer serious infections after surgery. We have learned that there are two 2 types of infection cases – soft tissue infections and peri-prosthetic joint infections.
The soft tissue infections are more common and are typically treated with medications or other non-surgical options or incision and drainage. If surgery is needed, the device may be removed and another permanent implant replaced in the same surgery.
We believe that joint implant patients treated with the Bair Hugger were exposed to dangerously contaminated air from operating room floors. We believe that the Bair Hugger device interferes with air flow in the operating room, causing bacteria and contaminants to spread to the surgical site. And it is not just us. In fact, the inventor of Bair Hugger warming blankets is warning of the risk for infections the device could cause when used during orthopedic surgeries.
Unfortunately, the consequences of these deep infections are usually very severe. These infections may require hospitalization or surgery. A revision or removal of an implant is common. Unfortunately these infections can even require amputation and cause permanent disability.
Peri-prosthetic joint infections generally require at least a 2-stage removal surgery (one surgery to remove the infected device and put in a temporary spacer in the same surgery and a second surgery to remove the temporary spacer and implant a permanent implant). If you have had a ‘spacer’, it is almost certain that you had a peri-prosthetic joint infection rather than a soft tissue infection.
The idea behind these blankets is to prevent hypothermia. Dr. Scott D. Augustine invented the Bair Hugger warming blanket but now calls it “old technology”. 3M claims his warnings are a mere personal vendetta. You can see an article from the New York Times.
However, some studies support our allegations that there is an increase in deep joint infections when forced-air warming is used compared to a period when conductive fabric warming is used. While we cannot say that there is a definitive link between the Bair Hugger and increased infection, the inventor continues to assert the Bair Hugger blankets are not as safe as previously claimed.
There have been lawsuits filed against the manufacturer of the Bair Hugger. These suits claim that the manufacturer knew about the potential increased risks of joint infections linked with the use of the Bair Hugger during hip and knee replacement surgeries. However they did not redesign the machine to make it safer or even warn healthcare providers of the infection risk. In fact, it is claimed that the manufacturer improperly downplayed the scientific research that found an increased risk of hip and knee infections with the use of the Bair Hugger.
TheLawFirm.com doesn’t have any significant evidence to support a claim that the Bair Hugger warming blanket causes an increased risk of soft tissue infections. Rather the science shows a significant increased risk of peri-prosthetic joint infection.
We work with some of the finest trial attorneys in the United States to pursue claims against the corporations who injure people just to make money.
If you had a surgery and got a serious infection afterwards, call TheLawFirm.com for a consultation. If a Bair Hugger blanket was used and a peri-prosthetic joint infection resulted, you may have a claim for compensation.
